[Video Link]. In this video, The Great Whale Conservancy (GWC) co-founder Michael Fishbach describes his encounter with a young humpback whale entangled in local fishing nets off the coast of Baja California, Mexico.

Spoiler: the whale is freed, and she survives. After she is freed, she breaches again and again in a way that suggests she is thrilled to be free and alive (yes, there could be more dull explanations for her behavior, but she sure looks like one overjoyed whale to me).

Even in the rare cases where humans are able to intervene to try and free whales trapped in fishing nets, this kind of happy ending is rare. I know people here in Southern California who have been involved in emergency rescue efforts, and the sad truth is: even with the best of efforts, they often fail. Knowing that makes this video all the more sweet.

If you would like to donate to The Great Whale Conservancy‘s efforts, or get involved to help save more whales like this, you can contact Mr. Fishbach at fishdeya@gmail.com, or contribute here.

Lights Out: In a provocative spoken-word piece entitled “The God Or The Man,” Jamie DeWolf, great-grandson of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, excoriates his great-grandfather for the “legacy of lies I still carries in my last name.”

Posting on Reddit, DeWolf writes:

i knew this story would die with me as no one else in my family will go on the record anymore about it. it’s a Scientology symbol on my right arm, the Zodiac Killer on my left, they both represent to me reminders of what happens when artists go wrong and all of us have gods and killers inside us. plus I’m a fan of irony. and it’s an awesome thing to expose to a Scientologist when they try to sell me a dianetics book.

Animated Short of the Day: Eyrie — a wonderfully animated short by CalArts alum / recent Dreamworks hire David Wolter, with a touching twist ending worthy of M. Night Shyamalan in a world where M. Night Shyamalan makes good movies.

Love Letter of the Day: Jelle Buyens writes: “This video is [dedicated] to the love of my life, Freyja. She broke up with me a couple of days ago because she wanted a new direction in her life and the feelings for me were burned out. I wanted to let her know that whatever that direction is, i want to be a part of it. And those feelings she had, they can return.”

To an inquiring commenter, Buyens posted this follow-up: “she has saw [sic] the video…she liked it very much…but it wasn’t convincing enough to get her back at this moment.”

Short Film of the Day: Before Lost made him one of Hollywood’s hottest writers, Damon Lindelof was trying to get his foot in the door with a one-act play about a time-traveling kid and the Fourth Reich.

Last year, that play — Ollie Klublershturf vs. The Nazis — became a short film. It stars Super 8‘s Zach Mills as boy genius Ollie and a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth as one of the Nazis.

The real reason to watch it is the punchline, though.
